Ìý
Laith found his passion for weightlifting during the pandemic. He realized how therapeutic and mentally clarifying it could be, especially during difficult times. Combining his passion with helping people succeed and crush both mental and physical goals is something that he hopes to continue throughout his professional career.

Student Personal Trainer: Liam Safier
Liam Safier is a sophomore majoring in Health Promotion and a certified personal trainer through the National Council on Strength and Fitness.
Ìý
Liam’s fitness journey began at age 15 during the quarantine. With limited activities available, he turned his physical health around by embracing the gym. His passion for personal training grew as he researched training methods to help friends begin their fitness journeys.
Liam excels in strength and hypertrophy training, his personal fitness goals, but has extensive experience in various aspects of fitness. His philosophy is that any goal—whether strength, conditioning, or functionality—is achievable by understanding and applying knowledge of how the body works.
With years of gym experience, Liam has also shadowed physical therapists and worked closely with other personal trainers. Having recently started his own fitness journey, he deeply understands the challenges of entering the world of fitness for the first time.
Student Personal Trainer: Jackson Miller
Hailing from the great city of San Francisco, Jackson is a Computer Science sophomore and personal trainer with the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Recreation and Fitness Center. Since freshman year, Jackson has been part of Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s rock climbing club and has also developed into a dedicated long-distance runner. He is returning this year as a personal trainer certified by the National Council on Strength and Fitness.
Ìý
Rowing ignited Jackson’s passion for fitness and regimented training. In high school, his coach would make his crew’s training plan public for the whole team to see, and hold information sessions for rowers who were interested in the science behind the training. Jackson was enthralled by the methodical block approach to training and yearned to learn more. After a successful high school rowing career including two-course records, a few medals, youth nationals, and an incident at the Head of the Charles, Jackson decided that he would pursue marathon running in university. After two successful months of training including a marathon, six half marathons, and a sixteen-mile run in under 2 hours, he developed runner knee, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis all at once. cutting him off from running. During this period he reflected on his training methodologies, learned the importance of recovery and preventative exercises, and also became certified as a personal trainer.
Ìý
Simplicity and persistence backed by powerful motivation and a genuine passion for fitness are what comprise Jackson’s training philosophy. These concepts appear in his training as benchmark exercises that exhibit the trainee’s gradual but consistent athletic accomplishments. This approach stems from his experience with rowing and long-distance running, where seeing improvement demands massive amounts of time to be invested in low-intensity exercise. The long hours spent running along the Potomac or doing laps around Lake Merced in California had a meditative quality for him, through which he learned the irrevocable power of showing up every day.
Ìý
When he isn’t running sixteen miles around the track, or bouldering at a local climbing gym, Jackson can be found reading, studying, or listening to jazz in the Davenport Cafe. If he isn’t in the Dav, chances are he’s talking to his friends about planning the next camping trip, making music, or finding a new flea market or thrift store to visit.
Nina is a current Professional Personal Trainer, with a certification from International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) with a specialization in Strength and Conditioning. She graduated from Â鶹ÊÓƵ in 2019 where she earned a degree in Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government (CLEG) with a minor in International Studies. While at Â鶹ÊÓƵ, Nina was a member of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Dance Team and a Game Day Leader her senior year. She continues to work with the team and choreograph halftime performances for them to perform.
As a lifelong dancer and athlete, Nina has learned to balance long hours at the studio and dance practice with taking time to rest and recover. While dance was a creative and physical outlet, it did not come without its challenges to overall mental and emotional health. Nina was determined to keep herself active after graduation and became a certified personal trainer with the hopes of furthering not just her own health goals, but for those around her as well.Ìý
Nina likes to incorporate variety and diversity to her fitness programs. No two people are the same, so no two workouts or exercise plans will work the same for everyone. Nina provides her clients with a variety of strength and plyometric training, while encouraging them to still partake in movement that they love outside of training hours. For Nina, that includes scenic runs around the city, dancing, and hiking. For others that may be swimming, biking, or even just walking around the neighborhood. With a balanced approach comes a balanced life, and Nina looks forward to sharing that with her clients.
When Nina is not personal training or working out, she can be found playing with her Chihuahua Ricky, trying out restaurants around D.C., or going to concerts. She also works as a Production Strategist at Sapphire Strategies, a 100% women led and owned digital agency that works to help elect progressive candidates across the country. Nina knows a thing or two about time management and how important it is to find time for yourself and your health!

Lori Murphy is a Professional Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor with Â鶹ÊÓƵ Recreation and Fitness Center (RecFit). She is a Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor. Lori brings over 12 years of experience in strength and conditioning movements and creating fun and functional training plans across all age groups. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Wildlife Science from Unity College, Unity, Maine.
Lori didn’t play many sports growing up, and didn’t really get into a gym until college. After moving to Washington, DC, she started adding swimming, cycling and running to her fitness regiment and within the last five years has competed in several triathlons.
During this time, she found herself unemployed from a 9-5 desk job and found that exercise gave her more energy which improved her physical and mental wellbeing. She decided she wanted to share these experiences with anyone who was open to making a change in their life.
Lori is committed to keeping up with her daily healthy habits, including being aware of taking the rest time away from training when necessary. She believes that makes for a well rounded healthy lifestyle.
When creating fitness plans for clients and students, she also believes in making sure their hard work includes functional training for daily life and must have an element of fun. She also believes anyone can reach any goal they focus their mind on accomplishing.
Outside of personal training, teaching fitness classes and racing in triathlons, Lori spends her time outdoors hiking, paddle boarding and horseback riding. She also plans fitness and social events with her students and clients to keep them motivated and enjoying all that life has to offer!

She leads Principal Innovation, LLC where she is an executive coach, team coach and consultant in leadership development and effectiveness. She is a Certified Personal Trainer with the National Council on Strength & Fitness (NCSF) and a Certified Leadership Coach with the International Coaching Federal (ICF).
Ìý
Sports and fitness have always been a part of Lauren’s life. She soon added weight training and saw the phenomenal effect it had on her performance. She took up triathlon, competing in local running and triathlon competitions.
Ìý
Throughout her life Lauren has never wavered in her commitment to fitness through running, cycling, swimming and fitness training. It became and continues to be a daily habit and a way to stay grounded while working and raising a family. Along the way, through her personal experience and as she studied exceptional leaders, she came to learn that those who recognize the connections between body, mind, emotion and spirit, practice mindfulness and are committed to a healthy lifestyle are the most successful leaders and happy humans.
Ìý
Lauren’s work as a personal trainer is informed and inspired by her work as a leader and executive and team coach. Her goal as a personal trainer is to create the optimal fitness program for every individual, addressing lifestyle, wellness and fitness goals. Lauren’s approach considers the whole person, creating not just a personal training program but a lifestyle program for health and wellness.
Ìý
When not coaching, consulting and training, Lauren can be found outdoors, where she finds respite in nature, playing with her dog and two cats, and spending time with her son Andrei.

Licensed Massage Therapist
Sam’s passion for health began as a runner. In just a few years of high school track, his mile run improved from 7:30 to 4:57!
After a successful running career, he shifted focus towards strength training, weight lifting, and even some bodybuilding. He worked as a Personal Trainer for Â鶹ÊÓƵ until Covid began. Since then, he has also become a Nutrition Coach and Massage Therapist.
One of his greatest features as a trainer is his collection of online fitness/workout videos. Many can be seen for free on Youtube, Instagram, and Tik Tok. As an In-Person Trainer, he prioritizes improving cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and full body flexibility! His main goal is to teach every client enough so that they can successfully create and follow their own training program(s).
Since becoming a trainer, I’ve revisited many of the sports I never thought I could play. I’m now a big fan of basketball, football, and track (of course)! I also enjoy volleyball, swimming, and soccer. I’m from New York so I love to root for the Knicks and Giants. In my free time I like to draw and listen to music!

Robin has several other NASM certifications including Corrective Exercise Specialist, Senior Fitness, Women’s Fitness, Group Personal Training, and Behavior Change Specialist.
After being a long-distance runner throughout high school and college, Robin started to experience a lot of hip and knee pain. To stay active and maintain her enjoyment in competitive and endurance sports like triathlon, while also adapting to an 8-hour/day desk job, Robin sought out strategies to combat repetitive use. When she was introduced to the NASM approach and OPT model for building stability, strength, and power, she immediately produced an array of positive results in her own fitness and well-being.
From that moment forward, Robin has utilized an approach to fitness that is functional and responsive to daily use patterns, focusing on strengthening underactive muscles and lengthening overactive muscles.
Robin embraces a holistic approach to health and well-being wherein she is aware of how our thoughts and behaviors are the building blocks to a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle. She understands behavior change does not happen overnight, and small incremental changes are the most long lasting. As a fitness professional, Robin believes the journey toward better health is lifelong and we all benefit from empathetic guidance and social support.
Robin’s approach to fitness and life is finding a balance between strength and flexibility. As a mom of two young girls and aspiring farmer who likes to get her hands dirty, she wants to be fit and ready for whatever challenges the day may bring while staying open to the little treasures that happen spur of the moment.

Even though Michael was very active and competitive in sports growing up, he was officially obese at the end of the sixth grade. Fortunately, he learned to balance his diet with Weight Watchers and started a fitness routine that led to a dramatic weight loss, which he’s learned to maintain throughout the rest of his life.
Michael was also very fortunate to start his career with Equinox Fitness, which was one of the only fitness companies that operated an in-house continuing education program for the personal training staff. At Equinox, Michael learned many innovative exercise techniques and training concepts from some of the brightest minds in the fitness industry, including Gray Cook, Tom Myers, Dr. John Berardi and more.
In graduate school, Michael suffered a string of injuries while playing American Football at the University of Essex. Michael fractured his fibula, and tore his Achilles tendon twice, all in one year. Michael has been very successful at maintaining an active lifestyle to this day, which includes running marathons, practicing kickboxing, and playing an array of sports that include basketball, flag football, softball and more. His approach includes a healthy dose of prehab exercises increase mobility, flexibility and range of motion while improving muscle activation to strengthen of weak muscles group and improve stability or body control in any movement. ÌýAdditionally, Michael’s astute ability to assess biomechanics helps his clients to eliminate adequately address movement dysfunctions and compensation patterns, which ultimately mitigates the risk of injury while improving one’s fitness and/or performance.
Michael describes himself as a holistic performance coach. He understands that it is just as important to perform well at work, in relationships or with stress as it is to perform well on the court, field and/or track. To accomplish this, Michael focuses on the hierarch of health, fitness and performance through detailed programming and simplistic coaching.
Michael understands that the modern lifestyle has many competing demands on our time, focus and energy. Traffic jams, work deadlines, social networks can easily interfere with the most well-intention plans to eat healthy, exercise right and sleep well. At the same time, Michael also understands that every little bit helps, and a good coach is someone that can help another person keep going despite the obstacles and find a sense of accomplishment along the way, as well as a bit of joy too.
When Michael is not working, teaching or taking class, he can usually be found playing basketball in Bender Area, working out in the one of the fitness centers, or participating in some of the intramural leagues on campus.
