Legal Strategies for Promoting Access to Medicines: A Conversation with Anand Grover, Top Indian Supreme Court Litigator

One of India’s foremost Supreme Court litigators on fundamental rights matters, Anand Grover, will share reflections on the historyÌýof Indian patent law and the developmentÌýof the generic industry; the issues that arose during COVID-19, and the use of law and litigation to promote access to affordable medications in India and around the world.Ìý Professors Sean Flynn and Padideh Alai will provide comments and lead a public discussion. This meeting will take place online and is open to a global audience.Ìý

Anand Grover directed the HIV/AIDS Unit of Lawyer’s Collective (India) and is the former United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health (2008-2014). He has argued several landmark cases in the field of public interest and human rights law, including the first constitutional challenge to Section 3(d) of the India Patents Act in Novartis v Union of India. He also argued the patent linkage case of Bayer v Union of India and successfully defended against a challenge to the compulsory license issued for the manufacture of an kidney-cancer drug in Bayer v. Natco.Ìý
