Eduardo Bertoni

Prof. Eduardo Bertoni (PhD, Buenos Aires University) is an international expert on data privacy, transparency and their intersection with technologies. He held high rank positions in government as well as in international governmental organizations and civil society organizations. He was frequently interviewed by the media and published several opinion pieces in leading newspapers in the Americas. Moreover he was member of boards of international organizations, like the Human Rights Initiative (Open Society Foundations), the Media Legal Defense Initiative, the Freedom of Information Advocates Network (FOIAnet), the Global Network Initiative, among others.

Prof. Bertoni currently is part of the group of expert in the Data Protection Field at the Council of Europe Data Protection Unit. He was elected as a Bureau member to the Committee of the Convention 108 -Council of Europe- in 2019 and elected member of the Executive Committee of the Data Protection Ibero-American Network. He was consultant for UNESCO, the OSCE, and for the UN Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights (UNOHCHR) for different projects. He is currently the Director of the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Washington College of Law.

Moreover, he was the first Director of the Access to Public Information Agency (AAIP) which is the Argentine Data Protection and Access to Information Authority and he was Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights at the Organization of American States (2002-2005). Founder and director of the Center for Studies on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information (CELE) at Palermo University School of Law, Argentina. Executive Director of the Due Process of Law Foundation (DPLF) until May, 2006. Teaching Fellow at the Human Rights Institute at Columbia University School of Law (2001). Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellow (2012-13) at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

Bertoni has also worked as an advisor to the Department of Justice and Human Rights in Argentina. He is an Argentinean lawyer and holds a Masters in International Policy and Practice from the Elliot School of International Affairs, George Washington University. Prof. Bertoni taught at Buenos Aires University School of Law and New York University School of Law (Global Clinical Professor), among others universities.
