Health Law Legislative and Regulatory Process (LAW-795RG)

Saturdays, May 31 & June 14 (11:00 am - 4:15 pm ET)

Lecturer: Ms. Abby Dugan
This course focuses on legal analysis and problem-solving in one of the most active and controversial public policy areas: health law. While policy details and substantive law will be an important part of the course, its primary goal is for students to understand the legislative and regulatory processes by which health policy is made and implemented and to prepare them to effectively advocate for a particular policy position in those settings. The course will focus on understanding the rules governing the legislative and regulatory processes, developing analytical skills to understand the costs, benefits, and trade-offs of particular policy decisions, and understanding the political and legal dynamics of legislation and agency rulemaking. We will apply these tools to current policy debates in health law and policy, focusing in on examples from the 117th and 118th Congresses.

Health Care Business Transactions (LAW 719-008)

1 academic credit

Sundays, June 8 & 22 (11:00 am - 4:15 pm ET)
In addition to the live class time, academic credit students will be required to independently complete 3 hours of additional asynchronous material.

Lecturer: Ms. Julia Reiland
This course is designed to introduce students to the business and legal issues that arise in health care transactions and the complex regulatory environment surrounding such transactions. This course will cover health care mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures, and contracting with providers, suppliers, and vendors. Students will gain practical knowledge and an opportunity to participate in health care contract drafting, issue spotting, and negotiation exercises. The goal is to provide substantial instruction in professional and experiential skills generally regarded as necessary for effective and responsible participation in the legal profession, including practical experience in negotiating and drafting health care deal documents. In addition to lectures that cover basic legal concepts, students will engage in experiential group activities similar to that of a transactional lawyer. These exercises will help develop a student’s ability to apply legal analysis to real client scenarios and develop written and oral communication skills. Because this course is intended to develop a student’s practical skill set, exercises will also focus on a student’s ability to evaluate how legal analysis impacts business expectations.
