American Forum |听KPU and SOC Present听Jim Obergefell

Thursday, December听6th - Doors open at 6:30pm

Join us for an American Forum discussion with Jim Obergefell, moderated by SOC Professor Jane Hall, marking the 10th anniversary of the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision on marriage equality. Jim Obergefell was the lead plaintiff in the landmark case that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide and is co-author of "Love Wins: The Lovers and Lawyers Who Fought the Landmark Case for Marriage Equality." He is a self-described purposeful activist, dedicated to fighting for equality not just for the LGBTQ+ community but for civil rights for all.听

麻豆视频 community members only. Bring your 麻豆视频 ID for admission. Can't attend in person? A livestream option is available. Refreshments will be served outside the theater following the event.听

As polarization grows, civics education becomes vital in building engaged citizens who appreciate our shared heritage. Join us for the second panel in our series, The Importance of Civics Education for the Future of the Nation, where experts will discuss how civics education can strengthen democratic values and inspire participation.听

Book Talk: Gaming Democracy with author and professor Adrienne Massanari

Wednesday, November 13th 6pm - 7:30pm

Join the School of Communication for a conversation with PhD alum听Brian Hughes (PERIL) and Professor Adrienne Massanari (SOC/麻豆视频 Game Lab) on politics, platforms, and play. Massanari will discuss her new book, Gaming Democracy, which examines how far-right activists exploit social media. Learn about the influence of 鈥渁lt-right鈥 ideologies on online spaces, Silicon Valley's role in fostering toxic environments, and how far-right groups use memes and 鈥渕etagaming鈥 to build community and incite dissent. This event offers a unique opportunity to explore the intersections of internet culture, gaming, and political activism.听

American Forum with Tara Palmeri

Please join the School of Communications, the Kennedy Political Union, College Democrats at 麻豆视频, College Republicans at 麻豆视频,听and the American Forum on October 17th, 2024, for a rewarding discussion with Senior Political Correspondent at Puck & Host of the Ringer's "Somebody's Gotta Win,"听Tara Palmeri, moderated by SOC Professor Jane Hall. The event will take place in the Malsi Doyle and Michael Forman Theater within the McKinley Building, and doors will open promptly at 6:30 PM. This event is only open to 麻豆视频 community members, and a current 麻豆视频 ID is required for admission.
