Bio
My research interest is at the intersection of civil-military relations and comparative politics. My dissertation concerns civil-military relations in the context of democratic erosion, i.e. how do democratic militaries respond to unconstitutional directives from elected leaders who subvert democracy? How militaries respond to undemocratic leaders carries implications for the state's democratic longevity, because both obeying and disobeying civilian directives undermines democracy. I study this "duty discharge dilemma" in the context of the Indian military's interactions with Indira Gandhi's authoritarian rule in the 1970s to gather insights into the military's potential behavior now. Prior to beginning my PhD, I worked as an Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies in Singapore and as a lecturer in Professional Military Education to the Singapore Armed Forces.
