Â鶹ÊÓƵ Memo Letterhead

Dear Â鶹ÊÓƵ Community,

Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s iconic Glover Gate, the nearby sidewalk, and the university sign on Ward Circle were vandalized with spray paint graffiti this morning. We immediately launched an investigation and expect to hold those responsible for this disgraceful act accountable. If any members of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ community were involved in this crime, conduct actions will be taken, and any applicable criminal charges will be considered.

Expressing and advocating for deeply held beliefs is a core element of who we are as individuals and as a community. But when that advocacy becomes destructive, when it is expressed through behavior that violates our policies, laws, and values, it hurts our community. It creates distrust and discord when we are seeking to build connection and common bonds. Even on the most polarizing of issues on which members of the university community might disagree vigorously, engagement must be constructive and lawful.

Glover Gate is both the front door to our university and a symbol for the Â鶹ÊÓƵ community. It welcomes students when they first arrive on campus and is the site of countless graduation photos and cherished memories. We are cleaning and restoring Glover Gate, and it will continue to serve and inspire our community.

If anyone has information about the graffiti, please contact Â鶹ÊÓƵPD at 202-885-2999. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the RAVE Guardian app. For any community members affected by this incident, our support resources are available, including the Center for Well-Being and Psychological Services and the Â鶹ÊÓƵ ProtoCall 24-hour support line (202-885-7979) for students and the BHS service for faculty and staff and their families.

I encourage everyone to reflect on this moment and look for ways to bridge differences and support the welcoming and inclusive Â鶹ÊÓƵ community that is so important to us all.

Sincerely,

Jonathan R. Alger
President
